"Street Fighter IV" Do I even need to introduce this game? I guess I do! It’s been 10 years since the last official street fighter game, 3rd strike, which was one of my favorite of the series. Although 3rd strike didn’t go down to well with many diehard fans, and received mixed reviews, is it even possible to reincarnate the series after so long? And how does it fair up against all the other fighter games, and next gen games, the real question is: Is this the best street fighter ever?
Overview
I must, and also feel obliged to complement street fighter 4 because of its sheer beauty and amazing game play, stunning finishes and animation that at times just looks hilarious. There is a lot to like about this game, and for good reason, you get all the players from the original and the cream of the other games. But there seems something very lacking. The focus attack is a useful technique but it doesn’t have the same devastation the parry system had in 3rd strike. The choice in some characters specials is questionable and also the lack of being able to pick your special, or at least have it in there. For two examples why did they destroy Ryu by refusing him an ultra combo dragon punch like Gouken; yet still give him a Sinku Hadoken? Probably cause the Metsu Hadoken looks cooler, and if that is the only case why not have a special move selector which could always change tactics on one player. My second is Chun Li's massive Hadoken that would have looked awesome, why didn't Guile get a massive Sonic Boom? The controls are very dumbed down and the d-pad movement directions are a lot more lenient. But this is the down fall. Although you have a super fast kick action game it’s not as slick as 3rd strike was. The depth of 3rd strike literally made it so that a single counter/move could turn the tide and often games can bounce back and forth. Street fighter 4 feels like a cash cow now, I can't deny its beauty or game play as a standalone game and all respect is given for reviving the genre. It’s a safe bet though Capcom. A very safe bet.
Gameplay - 7/10
I have marked down the gameplay 2 points since I first started this review and this is because the more I play it I see how much depth it has and it’s not that deep. It plays awesomely its quick fast beautiful, brutal adrenaline pumping awesomeness, yet it still feels very shallow.
Graphics - 10/10
The animation and graphics are near perfect everything looks brilliant. The character models move very nicely, watching Ryu or ken pulling of fireballs it looks like they really are throwing it out their hands.
Sound - 8/10
Its okay a bit cheesy at times, its pretty good.
Summary
Pros: True to the original fast paced fighting game
Gorgeous graphics brings the series into the HD-era
Cons: 360 pad is not designed for beat-'em-ups so need to get additional controller
It’s not 3rd strike, I don’t think it’s the best street fighter I have ever played.
Overall - 8/10
Over all the game is quite awesome, with a wide variety of characters, with gorgeous graphics it will be remembered as the main contender to 3rd strike for the crown but I truly believe that they have not knocked 3rd strike of. It doesn’t have the depth, the speed or technicality of 3rd strike, and as I’ve said if 3rd strike had the same line up as this game it would have been a lot more highly regarded.
