Can Video Games Create a Positive Impact on Learning?Published by forahobby on Thursday, June 06, 2013 Tagged: Gaming, Xbox 360, If you've been paying attention to controversies in the media, you probably notice that people are still looking about video games. Some parents do not feel as though their children are negatively affected, and others believe that video games can cause huge problems for young ones. Video games can create a positive impact on learning, but you need to consider a few points.
The Age Level
When a video game is not appropriate for the age level of your child, the learning effect might be the opposite. For example, let's take a very violent game that is intended for the teenager population. If younger children play it, they might be exposed to ideas and concepts that they are not fully ready to learn. This early exposure can cause a lot of confusion, and they may grow to not completely understand the subject matter at all.
The Content
Of course, the content of the game is going to have a huge impact on whether it has any educational value. It also depends upon what type of knowledge you are hoping to impart. A game where youngsters have to navigate a car through streets could help them with their motor skills, and a painting game could help to develop their artistic side. Clearly, a huge part of this depends upon what you are hoping for them to learn.
Your Role
As a parent, you need to remember that you have a major role in your child's education and that you ultimately need to be in control of the situation. If your child plays a video game that has educational value, you need to explain what the value is to them. A lengthy lesson is generally not needed, but it is your responsibility to let them know what they can learn from the game. If they are abusing the game or not paying attention to the educational components, then you can take it away from them. Parents must take a huge role in their children's education.
Games for Learning
Now, some video games are actually crafted toward children whose parents want them to learn. You might be able to find some games in your local shop that are geared to children of all ages. Work on playing these games with your children. At first, they might not seem too interested in them, but you can really help to build up excitement and to engage their attention. When you have school-aged children, you can talk to their teachers to get a sense of what some of the best games might be. Please be advised that all teachers might not be well-versed in video games, but it cannot hurt to ask for suggestions.
Some people believe that video games are evil, and they do not allow their children near them at all. However, as with so many things in life, it is important to find a balance. Children can still have fun playing their video games, but they can get some learning in at the same time.
